Top Cat

Cat chooses the cream of the high street

Two years ago, Cat Deeley wasjust another relatively-unknown MTV jock, but then Ant and Dec chose her to co-present SM:TV Live amd CD:UK, which became huge hits with the viewers and the rest, as they say, is history.
How do you describe your look?
I'm probably in that rock chick/indie girl category. I think it's great to wear trendy stuff, but I try to add something vintage or second-hand, like a belt, to give the look an edge. I love the way Cameron Diaz, Kate Moss, and Jade Jagger always look beautiful and stylish yet different.

Are the free outfits the best thing about working on TV?
Well, no, it's the free gigs, actually! I saw the Stereophonics recently and they were fab. I'm a bit of a muso anorak now and it#s great!

On a shopping spree, where do you head for?
TopShop, Selfridges, or Harvey nichols. I'd be lost without department stores, especially ones with loads of high street collections under one roof - it makes shopping so much easier.

Are you a speedy shopper?
Nah, I hate last-minute shopping, it's always unsuccessful. You can guarantee that when you've got money burning a hole in your pocket and somewhere to go that evening, you either won't find anything you like, or in your size. If I see something, I just buy it, it saves so much hassle.

Do you count the days to the sales?
Definitely not, I hate sales. I avoid them at all costs. They're way too stressful and I'm not into the aggressionthey bring out in people. [Whispers] But, saying that, i got a fab bargain last year. I fell in love with a gorgeous Nicole Farhi sheepskin jacket, but it was too expensive. Anyway, I kept taking my mates to see it, until i finally went in one day and it had been reduced. I was like, 'that's got my name on it, thank you very much.' At £900, it's the most expensive item of clothing I've ever bought, but it was worth every penny. I wear it all the time.

So, excluding the sales, what's your biggest shopping gripe?
I hate the way clothes are so expensive in this country. We're ripped off as far as prices are concerned. You can get stuff for half the price in the States, so I prefer toshop there because you can buy more.

What's your trusty Saturday-night-on-the-town outfit?
It has to be Earl jeans and a boob tube, worn with a leather jacket, killer heels, and plenty of sparkly powder on your shoulders, you can't go wrong!

Do you feel different about how you look, now you're famous?
Being famous hasn't changed my perception of myself - I've just grown up. I know who I am, whati like and realise I'm never gonna look like Kate Moss. You reach a point when you say, 'this is who I am and if you don't like it, then I don't care.' Of course, part of the job is making sure my nails are done and my hair is clean, bit I'd take pride in my appearance wherever I worked, I've always been like that.

What's the best thing you've done for your body?
About six months ago, I hired a personal trainer, but because I wanted to de-stress, rather than because I was worried about my body. Before that, my way of unwinding was going out with my mates and having a drink. Now, I do both and feel much better for it. But I'm certainly not an exercise freak. I'll do it, but never love it!

Have you ever dieted?
Not really, I just think it's a case of everything in moderation. Or maybe that's just something that someonw with the luxury of good genes says. I can't eat all day without it making a difference, though, so I just have three biscuits instead of three packets!

And what's the secret of your sickeningly gorgeous skin?
At the moment, i just use Nivea All-In-One Cleanser and an Aveda or Clarins moisturiser. I used to go for facials, but gave up on them. the whole deal with facials is that they make you look like crap to start with, but you have to persist. i didn't get that far, though. i like instant results. I'm really impatient!

What's your biggest beauty sin?
It's naughty, but I straighten the hell out of my hair. It's so thick and wavy, i can't do anything with it unless I get to it with irons. I'm lucky I have such strong hair. At least I hope I have - it'll probably fall out now.

Let us in on the best beauty advice you've been given.
Someone once told me to spend money on my hair. I mean, you might spend £200 on a dress you'll only wear once, but you freak at the thought of spending that much on your hair and you wear that every day.

So, where will you and your perfectly-coiffured hair be in five years from now?
God, i don't know. I can't think further than next week! There's nothing major I want to achieve. Anyway, if you pin yourself down and say 'I wanna do this by then,' it never works out how you want, does it? Career wise, i think I'd like to be doing something else. Maybe writing or producing, something behind the camera. Also, I love kids and 28 is sort of the having babies age, isn't it? We'll have to wait and see!
